The Ninety-Nines was founded in 1929 at Curtiss Field, Valley Stream, New York (Long Island).  All women pilots at the time (117) were invited to gather for mutual support and to form an organization that would support aviation education and the advancement of women pilots. Ninety-nine women responded to the invitation.

Thus was born this organization, now over 6,000 members strong from 44 countries.
